Politico: How Trump Could Lose a Trade War With China

After demanding concessions from allies by imposing steel and aluminum tariffs in March, US President Donald Trump has instigated a trade war with China without a strong global coalition for support. Analysts suggest that China, an authoritarian regime lacking in democratic or free market oversight, can move more nimbly and undergo less political backlash on the home front if a full-blown trade war begins. On the other hand, Trump's voter base may suffer as China hits back with targeted 25 percent tariffs on major US export goods like soybean and pork, major produce in the farming communities that supported him in the 2016 presidential election. Few would disagree with the notion that China has employed unfair international trade practices and advanced its high-tech industries by violating intellectual property protections. Experts like those from the Business Roundtable claim that Trump’s tariffs or pursuit of short-term deals not only hurt American businesses but could also adversely affect efforts to convince China to reform its trade policies over the long term.
