Poll Shows Most Want War Delay

With world powers squabbling over military action in Iraq, a new poll shows that President Bush may still have work to do to convince his own citizens that war is an immediate necessity. While a majority of Americans support military action against Iraq, 59% think that the United Nations should be given more time to carry out weapons inspections. And Americans continue to worry about the threat of terrorism, with only 28% believing Iraq poses a more serious threat than Al-Qaeda. The beginning of war will likely bring an increase in support for the President, and a majority do credit his administration with articulating a clearer argument for attacking Iraq in recent months. But President Bush, whose job approval rating has fallen ten points in the last month, may have other reasons to worry. Fifty-three percent of Americans disapprove of the way he is handling the economy at home, and only 47% approve of his management of foreign policy. – YaleGlobal
