Power-Sector Emissions of China to Top US
China and India view development and growth as a path to eliminating poverty and raising living standards, and that means more power generation in both nations. This year, China’s carbon emissions will surpass those of the US for the first time, reports the Center for Global Development, a think tank based in the US that examines how policies in developed nations impact the developing world. Electrical usage in the US emits about four times as much carbon per capita than in China, but that gap will shrink as China relies on coal for three quarters of its power generation. Neither the US or China have emphasized energy conservation as a priority. Reporting for the Washington Post, Steven Mufson compares emissions, usage and alternative-energy trends for the two nations, underscoring the huge challenges in getting climate change under control. – YaleGlobal
