The Right War for the Right Reasons
Although it is uncertain whether the United Nations Security Council will authorize American and British armed forces to disarm Iraq and remove Saddam Hussein, Senator John McCain firmly endorses this potential war, and praises it as an act of justice. He dismisses most critics’ claims that nonviolent options have not been exhausted by citing the UN's failure to disarm Iraq using nonviolent means in the past 12 years. To those who worry about the imprecision of US weapons, Senator McCain points out the inevitability of civilian sacrifice for a greater good. He also argues that the allegiance of the US government should, first and foremost, lie with the American people rather than with a broader international community. However, the senator doesn’t ignore the importance of maintaining US global credibility. In fact, he believes that fighting this war will ensure American stature and UN strength. – YaleGlobal
