Running Dry, Running Out

Struggles in supplying enough water to meet demand are not limited to dessert or developing nations, and nearly half of the population in England and Wales live in areas with “water stress,” explains Juliette Jowit in an article for the Guardian. She reports on a government environment report, which “warns that many rivers, lakes, estuaries and aquifers are already being drained so low that there is a danger to wildlife and a risk to public supplies in dry years, especially as climate change brings drier summers while the population is increasing.” The government expects people to use no more than 130 liters of water per day and is taking steps to increase installation of water meters, encourage conservation and adjust regulation to allow water companies to earn more profit for reducing demand. One official notes that water authorities can no longer operate the way they did for the past century. – YaleGlobal
