SA Innovation Bears Fruit in the US

The US Food and Drug Administration has approved use of ultraviolet light technology for purifying fruit juice, an alternative to pasteurization for eliminating harmful pathogens, reports the Mail & Guardian. SurePure, a South African company that developed the technology says it offers” greater microbiological efficacy than conventional UV systems and is effective for both clear and turbid liquids, a world first.” Relying on light rather than heat, the technology saves energy, a spokesman explained in the article, adding “fruit juice producing countries would have to now acknowledge the efficacy, safety and legality of this technology.” Food processors confronting tough national labeling requirements on preservatives could be likely candidates for seeking out the new technology. The article notes the process includes “less chemical intervention.” The company website adds, “Ultraviolet processing involves the use of radiation from the ultraviolet region of the electromagnetic spectrum for purposes of disinfection. “ The process is now used for wine, milk and syrups. – YaleGlobal
