Saving the Iran Nuclear Deal: Wall Street Journal

Global influence is in the eyes of many beholders. Whether Iran complies with terms of the internationally negotiated nuclear arms deal could determine if Europe is the more influential global power or the United States. The challenge: Iran, anxious about the economic impact of US sanctions, has breached limits on its stockpile of low-enriched uranium since July 1. “European foreign ministers said the 2015 nuclear deal with Iran can still be saved, despite U.S. threats to further tighten sanctions on Tehran,” writes Laurence Norman for the Wall Street Journal. UK Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt pointed out the ultimate goal is keeping the Middle East a region free of nuclear weapons. The United States withdrew from the agreement in 2018, suggesting the deal created a path for Iran developing a nuclear weapons. Other parties remained and have tried to develop a mechanism allowing Iran to continue with commerce. Europe urges de-escalation of tensions and opposes any military action. International inspectors continue to monitor Iran’s nuclear activities on the ground, and Iran's leaders must gauge how to win support from the international community. – YaleGlobal
