Silicon Valley’s Immigration Problem

Only a decade ago, the graduates of India’s finest universities looked to the US for jobs and other opportunities. “The US took “for granted that these talented immigrants want to come here and that they will help the next generation of American start-ups achieve greatness,” writes journalist Elizabeth Corcoran for “Forbes.” But recent graduates of universities like the Indian Institute of Technology – particularly young engineers – envision more opportunity and job security at home. Immigrants were responsible for 25 percent of technology startup firms over the last decade, reports one researcher, and regions like Silicon Valley will miss the influx of educated and skilled immigrants. India’s job opportunities for business and information technology graduates are so plentiful that talented US graduates head overseas as well. Innovation stems from talented workers willing to learn from others and prepare for global competition, and international exchange in talented labor has gone from a one-way to a two-way street. – YaleGlobal
