Sony Chief Stringer Blindsided by Hackers Seeking Revenge
Unpredictability and intrigue are the appeal of great video games, but Sony Corp. PlayStation Network customers are getting more delayed satisfaction than expected. Services were unavailable for nearly a month with more than 100 million accounts compromised worldwide, reports Bloomberg. The revenge hacking began after the corporation sued a 21-year-old customer for disassembling his PlayStation to try new applications and test vulnerabilities. The customer posted discoveries online, and Sony secured a subpoena to collect IP addresses of any who visited his blog. A source in the Bloomberg article advises companies to “consider carefully what data belongs on open servers, put one person in charge of administrative rights and keep track of how and when the network is accessed.” Customers who purchase internet-based products expect companies to invest in securing more than company secrets. And once products are in the marketplace, companies cannot expect customers to just play games and ignore the technology. – YaleGlobal
