The Sweetest Revenge

The 2,000 year old Jewish community in Uzbekistan in Central Asia is all but a relic of the past. Due to the economic crisis in Uzbekistan, the majority of its Jewish population is choosing to immigrate to Germany, more even than to Israel. As a result, only 60 years after the Holocaust decimated Germany's Jewish population, the influx of Central Asian Jews is revitalizing the Jewish-German community. Ironically, it is orthodox Jews in Germany who are asking the government to regulate Jewish immigration, maintaining that only individuals born to a Jewish mother should qualify for special privileges. However, the German government is committed to never again classifying individuals by their Jewish identity – a hard-learned lesson from Germany's anti-Semitic past. And, even as Germany grapples with a rise in anti-Semitic hate crimes, Jews see their thriving German community as the sweetest revenge on Adolf Hitler. – YaleGlobal
