Time: French Regulators “Embed,” Monitor Facebook

Governments and critics scrutinize Facebook for fake news, hate speech, and foreign advertising that raises questions about democracy and election results and even targets some groups with violence. France’s Emmanuel Macron has called for global regulation to ensure truthful posts and takes steps on regulation. “Starting in January, Facebook will welcome a small team of civil servants from Macron’s administration to shadow Facebook’s checks on hate-fueled content,” reports Time magazine. “If the six-month trial embed proves successful, Macron hopes to expand the arrangement to other giants like Amazon, Apple and Google.” Facebook has rules that encourage civil posts and employs 7,500 moderators. Determining who is at fault – individual users or corporate leaders – is a chicken and egg dilemma. Macron’s call for global regulation came shortly before a New York Time report suggesting that Facebook leaders worked harder to conceal criticism than take control over troubling Facebook posts. – YaleGlobal

Read the article from Time about France’s efforts to monitor Facebook’s controls over hate speech.

A New York Times report “Delay, Deny and Deflect” reports that Facebook leaders have resisted criticism and accountability on a number of fronts: “But as evidence accumulated that Facebook’s power could also be exploited to disrupt elections, broadcast viral propaganda and inspire deadly campaigns of hate around the globe, Mr. Zuckerberg and Ms. Sandberg stumbled. Bent on growth, the pair ignored warning signs and then sought to conceal them from public view.”
