U.S. Speeding Up Approval Steps for AIDS Drugs

In its efforts to distribute cheap and easy-to-use drugs, the global fight against AIDS has encountered serious roadblocks in the past. Local governments and pharmaceutical companies have often fought against generic AIDS drug distribution. Now, the US – which has been accused of slowing the process more than any other country – is willing to give in a bit to quell global criticism. At the World Health Organization annual meeting that begins today, the US is opening the door to quick approval of generic drugs and greater research into drug cocktails that could be easier to use for illiterate or poor consumers. The traditional AIDS drugs require a level of precision that is considered to be a deterrent for less-educated AIDS victims. At the meeting, there is also to be discussion on how to distribute drugs to the villages and towns that are inaccessible by car or other means of modern transport. The war against AIDS has often had to struggle against these sorts of difficulties.; However, if the US is actually showing signs that they are willing to cooperate with international organizations, the fight could get a lot easier. – YaleGlobal
