Virtual Secretary Puts New Face on Pakistan

While offshore call centers have become more commonplace, one US company has pushed this booming business to a new level: The Resource Group employs a "virtual receptionist." Though stationed in Pakistan, she receives phone calls, welcomes guests (via front desk flat screen), and places lunch orders for the Washington office. Proud company managers boast, "We're able to show that we practice what we preach." While strategizing to reduce costs, the company's founder, of Pakistani origin, also has a broader agenda – to promote investment and business development in the outsourcing industry in Pakistan, which has been viewed as unstable because of its large Muslim population and proximity to traditional terrorist states. Many American Pakistani expatriates hope that their home country will become more attractive as a place for foreign businesses and investment. The virtual receptionist at Resource Group's front desk may be a good start. – YaleGlobal
