Washington Post: Cruel US Immigration Policies

The US since its founding flourished with the help of immigrants fleeing persecution, poverty and conflict. Supporters of US President Donald Trump view the vulnerable newcomers as competitors for jobs and a threat to a way of life. The administration aims to tighten border controls and deter immigration with harsh rhetoric and policies – including separating parents from children. “The cruelty is the whole point,” argues Paul Waldman for the Washington Post. “It’s both a reflection of President Trump’s beliefs and those of his key advisers on immigration, and a practical tool they are using to reduce the number of immigrants coming to the United States.” The policy is applied even to families requesting asylum. Waldman goes on to explain the administration has also imposed caps on refugees, ended Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, barred entry from some Muslim-majority countries and ended temporary protected status for immigrants from six nations. Meanwhile abrupt change in US trade, defense and environmental policies contribute to chaos and desperation in other parts of the world especially the Middle East. Harsh immigration policies may not be enough to block people escaping horrific conditions in their homelands. – YaleGlobal
