Washington Post: “Here Is What My #S—hole Looks Like”
The United States is a country of immigrants. Ancestors of many citizens arrived destitute – from Europe, Asia and Africa – in search of opportunity and thrived. In a meeting, Donald Trump was reported to have rejected a legislative deal on immigration and asked, “Why are we having all these people from shithole countries come here?” before suggesting that immigration policies focus on places like Norway. The world reacted, expressing shock over how the comments defy US values. A spokeswoman for the African Union expressed concern about Trump leading a country that is a “global example” migration contributing to strength and diversity. "You cannot dismiss entire countries and continents,” said a spokesman for the UN human rights office. “I'm sorry, but there's no other word one can use but racist." Diplomats are demanding clarification. “I’m a Norwegian who enjoyed studying & working in the US. The only thing that would attract me to emigrate to the US is your vibrant multicultural society,” said the head of the Norwegian Refugee Council. “Don’t take that away.” A Republican pollster pointed out that “43% of immigrants from ‘s---hole” African countries have a bachelor’s degree or higher, compared to 33% of the overall American population.” People in less developed nations used social media to share photographs of scenic countryside and beaches. Trump is alone in denying that he made the remarks. – YaleGlobal
