Washington Post: India Imposes Retaliatory Tariffs on US

India has joined the global trade war alongside the European Union, China and other US trading partners in response to the Trump administration’s recent tariff hikes on steel and aluminum by increasing import duties on goods such as almonds, apples and select metal products. India notified the World Trade Organization of this decision on June 14. Annie Gowen reports for the Washington Post: “it is a $241 million measure that matches the amount of steel and aluminum import duty expected to be collected from India by the United States” via the Trump administration’s own tariffs unveiled earlier in the year. The amount of money involved pales in comparison with China – US-India trade was $114 billion in 2016, while US-China trade was $648.5 billion. However, India is the major buyer of US almonds. While US-India trade relations have always been rocky at best, analysts suggest that the escalating trade battles have the potential to cause a rift even as diplomats in both India and the United States have been trying to strengthen their military relationship. –YaleGlobal
