Washington Post: Trump Tweets Warning to Iran’s Rouhani

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani has not backed down in the face of threatening tweets by President Donald Trump in capital letters. The tweet was in response to a comment by the Iranian president. According to the Islamic Republic News Agency, Rouhani told a meeting of Iranian diplomats that “America should know that peace with Iran is the mother of all peace, and war with Iran is the mother of all wars.” US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo “Pompeo stopped short of calling for regime change, but he announced stepped-up U.S. government broadcasting in Farsi that is likely to foment further unrest against the government.” The US also sent mixed messages on talks with Iran: Trump said he would meet without conditions while Pompeo insisted that ending repression against dissidents and support for militant groups in the region would be among the conditions. Rouhani objects to the United States inciting Iranians against the government even as economic pressure builds after Trump’s withdrawal from the nuclear agreement and re-imposition of sanctions. The escalation of rhetoric could put the United States on a path toward direct confrontation with Iran. – YaleGlobal
