Why Parents Are Often the Biggest Obstacle to Achievement

Education is a long route to prosperity. Parents who view children as a resource that can contribute to a family farm, business or retirement often dissuade children from pursuing full education opportunities. “Because they equate education with loss,” writes Paul Phillips, principal and chief executive of Weston College. “That is to say, if a person gets an education they will leave and never come back; they will lose them forever.” Some parents fear the change and progress that accompanies a strong education system. Broad improvements in education can lead to community development and prosperity for all. Phillips recommends that partnerships between schools and companies for determining employment needs also include family members and concludes, “Improving access to education is a powerful weapon in promoting social mobility … but we must never forget that often the biggest hurdle for change can often be very close to home.” – YaleGlobal
