Written Again in British Blood
The UK has 3,300 troops in the Afghan province of Helmand, with increasing casualties, and thus author Ben Macintyre suggests that the British engagement in Afghanistan is settling into the pattern of what he calls a fourth Anglo-Afghan war. The deep history of conflict between the two countries, combined with the ongoing, organic nature of historical storylines in Afghan culture, combine to stoke resistance to UK as well as US forces. There is a familiar sense of bewilderment on the part of the Brits, who find themselves undermanned, with inadequate resources. Without rectifying these shortcomings and re-approaching the mission in Afghanistan with a direct and honest policy, Macintyre warns that Britain might once again fail in its attempt to bring stability to Afghanistan. – YaleGlobal
