Companies Call for Tougher Climate Action

Climate change and its many disruptions are not good for business – and corporate leaders are calling on governments to move quickly to stem climate change. Leaders of nearly 200 major companies are calling for a tougher response from nations convening in Durham for the annual global climate meeting, reports BBC News. The initiative’s name, 2C Challenges, refers to the effort to prevent average global temperatures from rising above 2 degrees C. The Corporate Leaders Group, with support from companies like Unilever, Philips and eBay, is not alone. A statement from the Institutional Investors Group on Climate Change suggests that “[A]cting quickly to implement tough climate policies would reap the biggest investments and the biggest rewards.” Steps to prevent global shocks from weather events include breaking the deadlock in UN climate negotiations, ending financial incentives for fossil fuels, conserving forests and assistance for developing nations to avoid infrastructure dependent on fossil fuels. – YaleGlobal
