Thailand’s Election: A Precious Chance
Electorates have a mind of its own, and “Five years of strenuous attempts by the Thai establishment to destroy Thaksin Shinawatra as a political force have come to naught,” reports the Economist. Pheu Thai, the party headed by Thaksin’s sister Yingluck Shinawatra handily won the Thai election. The decisive win could ease the bitter divide in Thailand, the scene of violent protests in 2010. As the Economist notes, Thais rejected the deference and hierarchy that comes with inequality and a pro-monarchy establishment. But that doesn’t mean voters will tolerate corruption or patronage among anti-establishment players. The Economist urges Yingluck to abide by promises in pursuing justice and reconciliation, rejecting populist policies and resisting amnesty that would allow Thaksin’s return. Voters expect the young leader to keep political promises and settle differences in parliament, not in backrooms or on the streets. Stability and reconciliation will strengthen Thailand and the region both politically and economically. – Yale Global
