In an effort to attract promising students, Asian universities are offering an education in English at a fraction of the cost of Western institutions. Singapore, Malaysia, and Hong Kong are all trying to attract international students with various points of interest: participation with Western universities, joint degree programs, and competitive prices. While many institutions are competing more and more globally for talented students, new countries are entering the fray: Thailand and Vietnam are likely to be the next low-cost providers; even Japan is admitting more foreign students. The demand is certainly there with the rise of the middle class in Asia. Australia, Britain, and the US still draw the most Asian students; but a rise in inter-Asian education may also be the result of external factors like tighter visa regulations in the US. In the globalized world, one country’s barrier is another’s benefit. – YaleGlobal
