¡Viva el Capitalismo!

In 1986, the Reagan administration secretly sold arms to Iran and used the proceeds to fund rebel fighters in Nicaragua. Twenty years later, Iran defies the US with its pursuit of nuclear weapons – and the Marxist candidate that Reagan opposed, Daniel Ortega, has won his country’s presidency. Ortega is not in the mold of a leftist politician like Hugo Chávez, and he won for two reasons, according to this opinion essay: a power-sharing pact with another party that faced charges of corruption as well as better relations between Ortega’s party and the Roman Catholic Church. Ortega evolved from a radical socialist to a traditional politician who enjoys influence and vows to eliminate poverty in the country of 5 million, but retaining investment and development. The passing of time, more so than US intervention, transformed a Marxist revolutionary. – YaleGlobal
