The Web as Weapon

Islamic militants are often perceived as having an "anti-modernity" platform. Yet certain terrorist leaders are placing an increasing importance on the control and dissemination of information related to their activities. As a result, the internet has emerged as a vital tool of terrorism, creating a union between technology and fundamentalism. More than anyone, Abu Musab Zarqawi, the leader of Iraq's most visible insurgent group, has mastered the craft of promoting terrorism through the internet. Zarqawi's rise to international prominence through his internet self-promotion was rapid and unexpected. It is generally acknowledged that his video showing Zarqawi beheading Nicholas Berg symbolized Zarqawi's ascent to the status of internet pioneer. As The Washington Post reports, cameramen are now essential members of insurgent attack groups in Iraq, and the desire to exhibit images and films of terrorist activity is clearly seen as a way to magnify the power of those attacks, to amplify the significance of particular acts in the global consciousness. – YaleGlobal
