World Donors Praise Kabul’s Budget and Development Plans

With the majority of its institutions and infrastructure in ruins following first civil war and then the war on terror, Afghanistan is urgently seeking international aid that would allow the country to get back on the road towards self-sufficiency. President Karzai and his government estimate the country will need at least $10 billion over the next few years to develop a viable economy. Thus far, many members of aid and financial organizations have been impressed with the new government’s work and have pledged over $5 billion dollars. It remains to be seen however, whether the money will flow through the United Nations and other aid organizations, or directly through the Kabul government, which desperately needs funding to maintain credibility and stability. - YaleGlobal
