Immigrant Horror Stories Leading Nation to Policy Change

Along the US-Mexico border, this year alone over 100 people have died while trying to illegally cross into the US. But the high death toll will not prevent yet more hopeful migrants from making this dangerous journey. Economic downturns like the current one often lead to calls for tougher immigration restrictions in the US, but, ironically, they also often coincide with an increase in flows of illegal immigrants from Mexico. The reality of the situation, says the author, is that American employers are willing to hire immigrants for the cheap labor they provide, and with 8 million in the service industry alone, they are a major part of the workforce. Until US immigration policies are better aligned with the economy's 'demand equals supply' logic, one immigrant advocate worries, the tragic deaths of undocumented workers will continue. – YaleGlobal
