YaleGlobal Contributor: Jean-Pierre Lehmann, 1945-2017
Jean-Pierre Lehmann, a long-time contributor to YaleGlobal Online, died December 21, 2017. He was 72. The professor emeritus of international political economy at IMD in Lausanne, Switzerland, also served as a visiting professor on the Faculty of Business and Economics at Hong Kong University. He held a doctorate degree from Oxford University.
Lehmann, a prolific contributor to the international press including YaleGlobal Online, was adept at assessing events on the world stage. YaleGlobal’s founding editor Nayan Chanda knew Lehmann for more than two decades and describes him as “a towering intellectual, relentless in his enthusiasm for discovering new horizons of globalization, unafraid to challenge conventional wisdom and a generous soul ever ready to support and promote promising young scholars. “
Lehmann authored several books including Japan’s Open Future: an Agenda for Global Citizenship with John Haffner and Tomas Casas I Klett and Peace and Prosperity through World Trade: Achieving the 2019 Vision co-edited with Fabrice Lehmann. He also was a steadfast contributor to many other publications that cover globalization including The Globalist. “He held roles in a number of public policy institutes and organizations,” explains the IMD announcement. “He was an adviser to governments and corporations, and a frequent commentator in the international media.”
Lehmann, who worked and traveled extensively throughout Asia, was an eloquent advocate of globalization and founded the Evian Group in 1995 to promote an open and equitable rules-based global economy.
Lehmann's final article for YaleGlobal was in 2014. In “The Global Pivot to China,” he observed: “Because Asia in the early 21st century is, as Europe was in the early 20th, the center of world power and potential, the implications for the wider global order are considerable. The center of the Asia Pacific Region is China. The ‘pivot to Asia,’ whether in its original American form, or its many reiterations, is in fact a ‘pivot to China.’”
