Project Syndicate: Macron’s Internationalism

In stark contrast to the views of the US president, French President Emmanuel Macron embraces a new global order and the growth of intergovernmental organizations. He still has strong faith in the Iran deal, and supports international trade is necessary for liberal-democratic politics. In the wake of Brexit, he pursues pan-European politics, maintaining a pro-globalization stance in the face of resistance against social democracy and increasing nationalist sentiment worldwide. Macron’s politics represent a mix of center-right and center-left policies, pitted against messaging from the far right and far left. Globalization is not enough to win over the popular vote, and if traditional parties wish to pursue such policies, they must offer other appealing social policies that support income distribution and effective social goods provision. – YaleGlobal
