A common perception is that Africa is a drain on global finances. Yet Africa is a net creditor, report Léonce Ndikumana and James K. Boyce in their book, Africa’s Odious Debts. The continent is a victim of capital flight, as funds from foreign aid, development loans and resource extraction are siphoned out of countries to bank accounts of the elite. Impoverished African citizens are then responsible for repayment of massive debts.
