DNA: Iran Warns Will Hit Militant “Safe Havens” Inside Pakistan

Iran, a largely Shiite nation, and Pakistan, largely Sunni, share a border of just over 2900 kilometers. To the north is Afghanistan. “The head of the Iranian armed forces warned Islamabad on Monday that Tehran would hit bases, safe havens and cells inside Pakistan if the government does not confront Sunni militants who carry out cross-border attacks,” reports Daily News & Analysis. Iran reports that 10 of its border guards were killed by Sunni militants in a region known for drug smuggling and militant groups. Iran's Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif also asked Pakistan’s Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to improve the border security, and he promised to fortify the border with more troops. Jaish al Adl, a militant group, claim the attacks are used to battle discrimination against minority Sunni Muslims in Iran. – YaleGlobal
