Hong Kong Protests Draw 1 Million Plus: BBC

As many as 1.7 million protesters of all ages bearing colorful umbrellas marched peacefully in Hong Kong’s Victoria Park and other parts of the city. “China, which has built up security forces in nearby Shenzhen, has likened the protests to terrorist activity,” notes a BBC News report. China has warned the city’s leaders not to lose control after recent violent clashes with police and disruptions at goveernment buildings and the airport. “The push to drive Hong Kong's pro-democracy movement in a more peaceful direction this weekend seems to have worked.” After the United Kingdom ended its administrative control of Hong Kong in 1997, China agreed to special status and rights under “one country, two systems.” Protesters seek democratic reforms, expressing concern about increasing Chinese influence.
