Spiegel: Killing Fields of Yemen

Despite technological advances in warfare, bombings in Yemen are indiscriminate. Fiona Ehlers, writing for Spiegel Online, describes the anguish of interviewing a father who displayed love for his sons while serving tea in his family home and learning a few weeks later that three of his four boys were killed while riding a bus to school. The war in Yemen is overlooked by much of the world because the country is poor, journalists are not allowed in, and refugees do not make it out. Ehlers explains how a local conflict transformed into a proxy war: “On the one side are armed Houthis, equipped by Iran with money and rockets. On the other is the coalition supporting what remains of the Yemeni government, led by Saudi Arabia and supported by billions of dollars' worth of weapons from the U.S. and Great Britain.” More than 10,000 people are dead and millions go hungry. Ehlers describes the deep polarization, hateful propaganda and warns there is no end in sight on a civil war devastating another country in the Middle East. – YaleGlobal
